KUALA LUMPUR — May 6, 2015: Petronas today unveiled a cargo vessel refurbished and converted into a mobile sea base at a handover and naming ceremony at Pasir Gudang, Johor.

It is named Tun Azizan as a tribute to the late Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin, who was president, CEO and chairman of Petronas from 1988 to 2004.

Speaking at the event, Petronas senior vice-president of corporate strategy and risks Adif Zulkilfli said it awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning contract to MISC Berhad and its partner Malaysia Marine Heavy Engineering last November to refurbish and repurpose an idle cargo vessel into the sea base.

This allows the sea base to function as a long-term national security asset.

Tun Azizan is the first sea base concept in Malaysia and Southeast Asia and has been structured to accommodate up to 99 passengers with facilities for accommodation, food storage, laundry, an operations & communication room, power generation, air conditioning, fresh water system as well as military equipment and infrastructure. All features and equipment have been fitted according to the technical requirements the Malaysian Armed Forces.

During the conversion and fabrication of Tun Azizan, Petronas managed to achieve 199,000 man-hours meeting excellent health safety and environment standards as well as zero lost time injury. — Bernama
